The Funky Monkey Vault

image2I recently visited the The Funky Monkey Vault, the newest endeavor by the folks who own The Funky Monkey Wine Company. I stumbled upon it (not literally!) after a great meal at Banana’s, on Mills Avenue just before heading north toward Virginia.

To my surprise, The Funky Monkey Vault had many of the wines I love to drink (big fan of Argentinian, South African, and Australian reds, here)!

OK, let’s take a look around:

Welcome!

Yelp Drinks Week 2011 Kicks Off!

You might recall Kim mentioning Yelp’s Drink Week, which kicks off today. We headed over to Wally’s on Mills Avenue to help Yelp Orlando start this awesome, week-long event. Drink specials (Wally’s), food truck (The Crooked Spoon) and cupcakes galore (Yum Yum truck) on a Monday night? Yes, please!

Here are a few shots we snapped:

So while we were there we thought we’d grab some food for dinner (as well as sneak a little drink from Wally’s on the side):

Shrimp & Grits from The Crooked Spoon Food Truck

Sweetness from The Yum Yum Cupcake Truck!

Looks yummy, and a fun event, right? Well…it was, so where were you?

Where do you plan on going this week to celebrate Yelp Drink Week?

Yelp Drinks!

What could be better than a city-wide happy hour lasting a full week? Yelp Drinks Week 2011 begins Monday, April 4, 2011, with 13 awesome bars around Orlando participating.

You might be wondering what Yelp Drinks is, so let’s break this down:

  • 50% percent off the regular list price of drinks such as Agave Nectar Margaritas (Crave), Dales Pale Ale (Milk Bar), Last Minute IPA (Orlando Brewing)

This is a great opportunity to get out and explore local bars, while gettin’  your drink on at a hard-to-beat price.

The full list of participating bars and beverages is available on Yelp.

Thanks to Yelp Orlando’s fabulous community manager, Colleen, for sharing this tip.

Marc Broussard – The Plaza ‘Live’ Theatre

Last night was full of firsts. Even though it was my fifth time seeing Marc Broussard, it was my very first show at Orlando’s Plaza Theatre.

The Plaza has been a part of Orlando’s footprint since the 60s when it opened as the city’s first two-screen movie theater. Then in the 90s, it was converted into a live music venue. The Plaza shows its age, but one huge advantage to seeing a show there … you feel like the artist is performing in your living room … or at least that’s how last night’s show felt.

Marc opened the show with fan-favorite “Rocksteady,” but quickly began introducing tracks from his latest EP which officially releases in June, but is available for purchase at all of his shows.

Speaking of which, if you bought the CD at last night’s show, you got to hang around after for an extra acoustic set. It was hands-down one of the coolest concert experiences ever. What’s better than standing just a few feet away from one of your favorite artists while they do their thing?!

There’s no official release date for the new EP yet, but check out Marc’s website for more info.

Up next, a post about The Social Chameleon in Orlando’s Milk District … last night’s other first.

World of Beer

It’s not often I venture over to restaurants or bars in Southwest Orlando, but this past weekend I wanted to do something different so I headed to the Dr. Phillips neighborhood first for dinner at Stonewood Grill (yum!) and then to World of Beer for, well, beer.

I’d heard that World of Beer opened, so I was excited to check it out. I was a bit skeptical, though. Bars in plazas don’t generally appeal to me, but they somehow overcame this at WOB.

Even though when we arrived Saturday night, the bar was packed, we managed to find a place to land and grab a few beers … service was a bit slow, but the bartenders were hustling. The toughest thing about getting a beer there wasn’t really the service, but narrowing down the selection. World of Beer has more than 500 (!) beers  to choose from.

Beyond the beer, they also feature Live music every Thursday, Friday & Saturday … the guy we saw Saturday was really good.  WOB has some awesome specials, too,  including the one currently running for Mardi Gras–$3 Abita Drafts!

For more info, check out WOB online … they’re social!

Shipyard Emporium Grand Opening and Beyond

Sadly, neither of us were able to make it to the Shipyard Emporium Grand Opening despite my obvious interest in going.

Thankfully, friend of Pulse, April Killian, did attend and offered to share her thoughts.

April Says:
So I went to the grand opening of the Shipyard Market, Bakery, & Brew Pub located at 200 W. Fairbanks Ave. Winter Park, FL. This place is a definite must go! They managed to combine some of my favorite things in life into one fantastic location: beer, wine, bread, baked goods, great food, and shopping! Seriously?! Where else would you need to go on a Saturday, Sunday, Friday, forget it… or any day?!

Can you say big beer selection?!

The location in town is convenient to get to. Parking is a little scarce so be prepared for that battle but it is well worth the fight. The staff is uber-friendly and their brew-tastic knowledge is bordering on impressive. All staff members had to attend beer classes and school prior to the opening and they can tell you what ingredients were used, what foods the beer pairs well with, as well as the alcohol percentage.  PLUS they brew some beers on site and will be changing the draft selections out periodically so you will never tire of what they have on tap. Also, you can purchase a Shipyard large ceramic beer stein that you have to leave on-site (sad I know, but then you don’t have the risk of losing the thing nor do you have to wash it!). The price was $50 and you get a permanent discount on draft brews. Oh, and if you are tired of drinking beer (funny!) they have a fantastic home-made root beer on tap that I was practically begging them to throw a scoop of vanilla ice cream into.

Whoa, that's a big mug o' beer!

I think that will make it to the menu VERY soon. For now go for the beer and great local foods, do a little shopping for take home items, and be sure to try the root beer. I highly suggest that you make a point to visit this place if you have not done so already!

April’s details on the opening made it sound so much better than I could hope for, so I decided to check out Shipyard for myself this past week. Five days after their big grand opening, I saddled up to the bar for a beverage. A couple of things stood out to me … they were out of a few of their own draft beers; (Obviously they underestimated how much we drink in Winter Park!); everything on their menu sounded delicious (mostly sandwiches and salads) and each item had a locally inspired name;and parking is precarious even post-grand opening, on a Wednesday. Most memorably though, they served the Seadog Bluepaw draft with FRESH BLUEBERRIES! Nice touch!

So … have you been? We’d love to hear what you think. And, if you want to see more of April’s pictures, check out our Flickr page.

One80 Opens at Amway Center

Before last Wednesday’s Orlando Magic game, I had the chance to sneak up to the Amway Center’s newest addition, One80. Situated atop the Amway Center, One80 provides one of the most amazing views of downtown.

With its sleek white walls, it definitely has an upscale vibe that feels more like South Beach than Orlando, but it’s a welcome addition and could give one of our favorite rooftop bars a run for its money.

Managed by Church Street Entertainment, One80 is still in the soft opening phase, but their staff says they plan to be open on non-event nights as well as during Magic games and scheduled concerts at Amway.

Fortunately, last Wednesday provided not only a great view of downtown Orlando, but a beautiful full moon, too!

Graffiti Junktion – College Park

For the third time yesterday, I stopped into Graffiti Junktion‘s newest location in College Park to order what has now become my favorite burger in Orlando. And no, I’m not a food blogger, so I failed to take a single picture of said burger. The Fog City burger is an enormous turkey burger with all the right moves, er toppings … lettuce, sprouts, avocado and pepper jack cheese.

Is your mouth watering yet?!?

Graffiti Junktion’s been a welcome addition to the College Park neighborhood. The corner location on Edgewater & Vassar includes both indoor and outdoor seating, and most nights you can find a lively crowd spilling outside the restaurant and cheering on their favorite sports team.

They have a fun beer selection, too, including another favorite of mine, Orange Blossom Pilsner. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, they’re social, too, so check out Graffiti Junktion on Facebook or Twitter!

More Music Coming to Downtown Orlando

You know how much Ashley and I love music and are big-time concert-goers. So, when Kelly Fitzpatrick blogged about Tabu changing its name to The Beacham (its original name in the 20s), I was pretty psyched.  The name change brings with it a new place for Live Music while also keeping the weekend ‘club nites.’ (Personally, I would’ve loved to see these disappear!)

Although, it does seem to put to rest another rumor I’d heard about another hugely popular music venue taking over Tabu’s space–which is kinda disappointing. Nonetheless, with the return of The Beacham, Downtown Orlando now boasts even more opportunities for Live Music.

Oh, and on a related note, Velvet Sessions are back January 27 with Little River Band.

Beer:30 at Orlando Brewing

Apparently all my posts are about beer … what can I say, tis the season!

Anyway, next week, just in time for pre-New Year’s celebrations, Orlando Brewing is having its monthly Beer:30 event.

What’s Beer:30, you ask? Simply, $2 beers ALL DAY.

I happened upon a Beer:30 a couple months ago and let me tell you, it was packed, but also a ton of fun.
