I guess Starbucks isn’t the only coffee shop taking a hit in these troubling economic times.
The Daily Grind coffee shop on North Orange Avenue in Downtown Orlando is closing next Friday, October 17. Owner and Area Franchise Developer Larry Merla blames a lack of foot traffic for the closing.
This probably comes as no surprise to those who live and work in the area. The “Uptown” portion is only immediately surrounded by two apartment buildings and two or three high rise office buildings.
What the heck?!?! That’s crazy — it’s barely been around for six months. Aren’t there many businesses on Magnolia, just around the corner? I would think this would at least give some foot traffic.
I’d be curious to know what sort of marketing the store has done. Really sad….
How BAD a business plan could this guy have had that they cannot survive 6 months of operation to get properly established?
Oh wait, they spent all the money on fancy logo and graphics, that’s it. Totally embarrassing.

I wouldn’t necessarily say a “bad” business plan is to fault, but it does seem like the store hasn’t been open long enough to get a fair shot.

6 months of operation sounds like poor cash-flow issues to me. Not to mention the owner (Larry) is a complete JERK. His wife (elaine) was super sweet and his manager was a nice enough guy. But all it takes is one “bad” experience, which this guy Larry seems to be full of. I boycotted the store after overhearing him talk to an employee at lunch. I’m guessing the rest of Uptown followed suit.
I hope someone else opens a Daily Grind nearby soon, I sure miss their espresso blend. Mmmmmm.
That’s too bad, Rick. So true about one bad experience though. Especially for something like coffee or espresso–not exactly in short supply!
OMG!! I was doing a web search telling my friends it is the best coffee house to go to!! The staff there is by far tops in customer relations. The coffee is my favorite ever, and I mean by far tastes theeeee best. The food they offer is also delicious!! I haven’t been there in some time due to moving and job change, but I am sooooo sad and disappointed that they are closing. I’m really gonna miss you all!!!
@Jenni Now there’s a fun little shop there called “Virgin Olive.” I’m anxious to go experience it; I’ll write a post about it.
